Getting Started with Twitter For Dummies

So Im not the best with social media, never have been. Recently I’ve been slowly trying to change that but some of still escapes me. One of the ones that always just confused me was twitter, yes I signed up ages ago and then sorta left it. I followed a few people, friends a couple big names that seemed to post funny things and that sort of thing. Then never really used it again. So I in this post I am going to attempt to understand how to use twitter.
If you are going to join me on this little adventure then I will assume that you already have a twitter account and that you’ve at least glanced at some of the tweets other have made, as I have. Im just going to try and understand how hashtags and the like work. If you have any further advice you can offer then let me know, or any other questions you want to try and investigate then ask away! Lets go.

First thing first, I want to talk about setting up my profile and making it look pretty. Reason I always start with this is that I want to be confidant that I have something that I dont mind sharing with people, something I can be a little pround of.
Obviously I have my name set up as @Maladjustdfreak, same name as the domain so easy to remember right?
So this is how my profile looks to start with
Old twitter
I already had a profile picture but I used quite a small icon at 100x100px, the limit for a profile picture is 400x400px. So I think its time for an update with something a little larger and clearer.
Next is the header, that’s the image that seen at the top of the page on your profile. At the minute I’ve used an old pattern which on a small screen is fine but again it’s such a small res it’s all blury and ick. The largest image you can use 1500x1500px, so Ive thrown a quick banner together that I like and thats the image side of the profile done.
New Twitter
I like that, seems a little more personal.

On the writing side your profile requires, your name, no explanation needed there.
Location, where are you. Website, easy enough.
Theme colour, this doesn’t seem to affect much beside the colour of the links on your own profile. I changed mine to blue to match the image better.
Birthday, this one is optional or you can partially fill it and change who sees it if you don’t to share.
The one I always struggle with is the actual Bio, writing about myself not my favourite thing in the world. So following the advice of most sites out there I’ve looked at other people bios and tried to come with a few words that describe me or what I might be posting.
when writing the bio you only have 160 character to fill, I noticed the alot of profiles, personal one at least, tend to just list characteristics so thats the method I went with.
So far Ive come with:

Bit of a geek, Bit of a crafter, Bit of goth, bit of a blogger, Bit Random really.

It’s very similar to my instagram one but a tad longer. Its short sweet, and pretty much covers me so Im happy with it.

And that is how I’ve set up my profile on twitter. Yeah, I know its not much and its all simple stuff but this post is getting a little long so for the time being that’s all you get. Tune in next time where I will actually talk about tweeting. Check it out Im using the lingo!

Here are some of the sites that have helped me out.
The twitter support page is great for help.
This Mashable had a great page for writing your bio.
